Prof. (jun.) Helen Kohlen
Care Policy and Ethics
As a social scientist, Jun. Prof. Dr. phil. Helen Kohlen is specialized in the area of care policy and community nursing by foregrounding international discourses on caring concepts and theories. She has done research in the sociology of bioethics and teaches critical theory. In her doctoral thesis she studied the development of Hospital Ethics Committees and Nurses’ Participation. For her work she has currently been awarded by the Institute of Humanity, Ethics and Science. The social field of community nursing, gender and migration is her current focus for further research questions.
Short Curriculum Vitae
- Helen Kohlen graduated from the Institute of Political Science at the University of Hannover.
- She was a visiting scholar at the Center for Bioethics at the University of Minnesota and at the Center for Ethics and Health Care Policy at Creighton University, Omaha.
- She studied Social Science at the University of Hannover, taught at several universities and colleges in Germany as well as at a vocational school.
- At the University of Osnabrück she graduated in Health Care Science and English.
- During her first academic education she studied in the United States, and did internships in England and Ireland. Care for handicapped children, community nursing and intensive care were her main areas of nursing practice.
- She belongs to the founders of the working group “Nursing and Ethics” within the Academy of Ethics and Medicine in Germany.
- She is member of the German Association to promote Nursing Science and Nursing research.
