[Translate to Englisch:] General Study Information
What can be studied at the Catholic Faculty of the Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule in Vallendar?
We offer the degree in Theology (Dipl. theol.), the licentiate, (Lic. theol.), the doctorate (Dr. theol.) and the possibility of Habilitation. (Dr. theol. Habil.).
The Phil. Theol. Hochschule is a church and state-recognized academic University in free ownership. All four theological degrees are applying both in the church as well as in state legal areas.
The Phil.-Theol. Hochschule of the Pallottines is located in Vallendar near Koblenz since 1945. Originally it was a theological training centre for young priests of the order of the Pallottines. Since the state recognition (1979) as academic university in free ownership, laity, men and women are being trained as theologians. They find their professional fields as pastoral assistant, religious teachers, in youth and adult education, the media but also in the economy and health system.
Legal and financial sponsor of the Phil.-Theol. Hochschule Vallendar is the Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule Vallendar gGmbH. Their partners are the German-speaking province of Pallottines and the Waldbreitbach Franciscan.
What professions are prepared in the courses offered at the Faculty of Theology?
Our university offers primarily a degree course in Catholic theology, which is a theological full time course. This degree course is the normal requirement to become priest or pastoral assistant.
Which entry requirements must be met in order to enrol at the Faculty of Theology?
An application or admission procedure does not exist.
To become a full student, (i.e. to be able to earn a degree), you will need a university entrance admission according to the country-specific university laws, which is typically acquired through the Abitur . However, there are other possibilities to acquire a university entrance admission.
In order to register for a licentiate or doctorate study, a degree of catholic theology or equivalent as well as a sufficient knowledge of the ancient languages must be demonstrated.
The enrolment for non-Catholic students is allowed with permission of the rector.
Foreign applicants must demonstrate a necessary knowledge of the German language in order to register at the university. Further information can be found at study information for foreign students.
How does the enrolment proceed?
The enrolment (matriculation) requires a personal visit at the Studies Office.
The enrolment period is at the end of the previous semester (in February or July) and just before the beginning of the semester (in April or October).
Please discuss the possibility of enrolment with the academic office, if you are unable to meet the scheduled deadlines.
How are credits recognized, which were achieved elsewhere?
The recognition of previous studies is possible if these achievements are demonstrated through graded certificates.
The responsibility for such recognitions lies with the Dean of Studies. You can check in advance which of your achievements will be recognised.
What should you consider for your studies, if you are thinking to engage in the service of the church?
Students who are thinking to engage in the service with the church, particularly as a priest or pastoral assistant, should contact their diocese e.g. through the responsible diocese authority “professions of the Church”.
It is recommended to contact the diocese early, preferably even before the beginning of the studies. This is because the education systems of the dioceses require other training elements (e.g. internships) in addition to the degree courses.
